To choose an appropriate toothpaste, several criteria should be taken into account, such as the fluoride content and the abrasiveness of the product.
Fluoride Content
Toothpaste for adults should contain between 1000 and 1450 ppm of fluoride to ensure effective protection against dental caries.
Specific Situations
In cases of:
• Dentine hypersensitivity
• Frequent gum bleeding
It is advisable to choose a toothpaste specifically formulated to treat these symptoms.
Abrasive Toothpastes
Frequent use of abrasive toothpastes, such as whitening toothpastes, should be avoided. Daily use of these products may lead to enamel wear and, consequently, increased sensitivity to cold.
After Brushing
It is important to allow the toothpaste to remain on the teeth, so you should avoid rinsing with water immediately after brushing. The toothpaste that remains in contact with the teeth for the following minutes allows its active ingredients to be absorbed into the enamel, increasing its effectiveness.
